The short answer
For most Phoenix homes, a MERV 8–13 filter is the sweet spot — high enough to capture fine Arizona dust, low enough to protect airflow. Higher MERV isn't automatically better: too-restrictive a filter starves your system, hurts cooling, and can freeze the coil.
What does the MERV rating mean?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates how well a filter captures particles, from MERV 1 (almost nothing) to MERV 16 (very fine). Higher MERV traps smaller particles — but it also restricts airflow more, because a denser filter is harder to pull air through.
That trade-off is the whole story in Arizona: you want to capture relentless desert dust without strangling the airflow your AC needs to cool your home.
Why is MERV 8–13 usually right for Phoenix?
The practical breakdown for desert homes:
- MERV 1–4: cheap fiberglass — protects the equipment but barely touches fine dust; not enough for Arizona
- MERV 8–11: good capture of household and desert dust with airflow most systems handle well — a solid default
- MERV 13: captures finer particles (helpful for allergies and monsoon dust) if your system can handle it
- MERV 14–16: excellent capture but often too restrictive for standard residential systems — can hurt airflow and freeze the coil unless the system is designed for it
Match the filter to the system
The 'best' filter is the highest MERV your specific system can handle without losing airflow. When in doubt, MERV 8–13 with frequent changes beats a high-MERV filter that chokes the system.
Why isn't the highest MERV always best?
It's tempting to buy the densest filter on the shelf, but a too-restrictive filter raises static pressure, reduces airflow across the coil, drives up energy use, and is a leading cause of a frozen evaporator coil. You can actually make your air worse and your bills higher by over-filtering.
If you want very fine filtration (true HEPA-level), the right approach is usually a dedicated media cabinet or bypass unit — not jamming the most restrictive 1-inch filter into the return.
How often should you change it in Arizona?
Change a standard 1-inch filter monthly during heavy-use and monsoon months, and check it often — desert dust loads filters fast. Thicker media filters (4–5 inch) last longer, often a few months, and restrict airflow less for the capture they provide.
A clean filter is the cheapest comfort and efficiency upgrade you can make. If you're not sure what your system can handle, RM III will recommend the right MERV and change interval for your equipment.
For many modern systems, MERV 13 is fine and great for allergies and monsoon dust. For some older or airflow-limited systems, MERV 13 in a thin 1-inch format can restrict airflow too much. The safe path is to confirm what your system can handle, or use a thicker 4–5 inch media filter that achieves higher capture with less restriction.
True HEPA is usually too restrictive to drop into a standard return — it can starve the system and freeze the coil. To get HEPA-level filtration, use a dedicated bypass or media cabinet designed for it, rather than forcing a HEPA filter into a slot built for a standard one.

- Evaporator coil (indoor coil)
- The indoor coil where refrigerant absorbs heat from your home's air. A dirty, iced-over, or low-refrigerant evaporator coil is one of the most common reasons an AC runs but won't cool.
- UV germicidal light
- An ultraviolet light installed at the coil or in the air handler to kill mold, bacteria, and biofilm that thrive on a cool, damp evaporator coil. Helpful for indoor air quality and for keeping the coil clean in humid monsoon months.
