Why Is My AC Freezing Up in the Middle of Summer?

Finding ice on your AC in the middle of a Phoenix summer feels backwards — here's why it happens, how to safely thaw it, and what a tech needs to fix.

The short answer

An AC freezes up when something drops the coil below freezing — almost always restricted airflow (dirty filter, blocked vents, weak blower) or low refrigerant from a leak. Turn the system to FAN to thaw it, fix the airflow basics, and call a tech if it ices again.

Why does an AC freeze when it's 110° outside?

It seems impossible, but freezing is about the coil, not the weather. The indoor evaporator coil runs cold to pull heat from your air. If airflow across it drops too low, or the refrigerant charge is wrong, the coil temperature falls below 32°F and the moisture on it turns to ice — which then blocks airflow completely and blows warm air.

So a frozen coil in July almost always traces back to one of two things: not enough air moving across the coil, or a refrigerant problem.

How do I safely thaw it and check the basics?

Do this safely, in order:

  1. 1Turn the thermostat from COOL to OFF, but set the fan to ON — running the blower with cooling off thaws the coil faster. Never chip at the ice.
  2. 2Give it a few hours to fully thaw (a heavy freeze can take longer).
  3. 3Replace a dirty air filter and open/unblock all supply vents and return grilles.
  4. 4Check that the condensate drain isn't overflowing from the melt — a clogged drain can trip the safety switch.
  5. 5Once fully thawed and dry, switch back to COOL and watch whether it ices up again.

Don't run a frozen AC

Running the compressor while the coil is iced can damage it. If you see ice, switch cooling OFF and the fan ON to thaw before doing anything else.

What are the root causes a tech must fix?

If it freezes again after thawing, the underlying cause is usually:

  • Low refrigerant from a leak (very common) — needs a leak search and repair, not just a refill
  • A dirty evaporator coil restricting airflow
  • A failing blower motor or wrong fan speed
  • A stuck or failing metering device (TXV)
  • Severely restrictive (too-high-MERV) filters or undersized ductwork raising static pressure

Why is freezing a problem worth fixing fast?

Beyond losing your cooling on a hot day, repeated freezing can flood your air handler and ceiling with melt water and shorten the compressor's life. The water from a thaw can also overflow the condensate drain and trip a safety shutoff — turning one problem into two.

Because the common cause is a refrigerant leak, ignoring it tends to get worse, not better. A technician can confirm whether it's airflow or refrigerant and fix the actual cause.

Common questions
  • Only as a short-term bridge. If the coil refreezes, the underlying cause — usually low refrigerant or restricted airflow — is still there, and running a frozen system can damage the compressor and flood the air handler. Get it diagnosed rather than thaw-and-repeat all summer.

Terms in this guide

Evaporator coil (indoor coil)
The indoor coil where refrigerant absorbs heat from your home's air. A dirty, iced-over, or low-refrigerant evaporator coil is one of the most common reasons an AC runs but won't cool.
Refrigerant
The fluid that carries heat through the system. Older systems use R-410A; new equipment is transitioning to lower-global-warming refrigerants such as R-454B. Refrigerant should never need 'topping off' — if it's low, there's a leak that needs to be found and fixed.
Metering device (TXV)
A valve (often a thermostatic expansion valve, or TXV) that controls how much refrigerant enters the evaporator coil. A failing metering device can cause the coil to freeze or the system to lose capacity on the hottest days.
Static pressure
The resistance air meets as it moves through your ducts and filter. High static pressure — from undersized ducts or a too-restrictive filter — makes the blower work harder, reduces airflow, and can freeze the coil.
MERV rating
Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value — how well an air filter captures particles, from MERV 1 to 16. For Phoenix dust, MERV 8–13 is the practical sweet spot: high enough to catch fine desert dust, low enough not to choke airflow. Higher isn't always better without the right system.
Condensate drain line
The line that carries water (condensation) away from the indoor coil. In Phoenix's monsoon humidity it can clog with algae and overflow, tripping a safety switch that shuts the AC off — a common 'AC stopped working' call.
