What is a ductless mini-split?
A ductless mini-split is a small heat pump that skips ductwork entirely. One compact outdoor unit connects to one or more indoor 'heads' — mounted high on a wall or in the ceiling — by a slim line carrying refrigerant and power through a roughly 3-inch hole. Each head blows conditioned air directly into its room and runs on its own thermostat.
Because there are no ducts, there are no duct losses, and you're not forced to cool or heat the whole house to fix one space. Like any heat pump, a mini-split both cools and heats.

Zoning is the quiet superpower here: you can set the casita warm for guests and leave the gym cool without touching the rest of the house. In a climate where cooling is most of your bill, only running what you use adds up.
What should you watch out for with a mini-split?
In other words, a mini-split is the right tool for specific jobs. Used where it fits — additions, casitas, garages, problem rooms — it's hard to beat. Forced onto a job better suited to central air, it's just more expensive.
Mini-splits are excellent when applied right, but a few honest caveats:
- Sizing still matters — an oversized head short-cycles and dehumidifies poorly, so a load calc beats guessing here too
- The indoor head is visible on the wall or ceiling; most people stop noticing it, but it's not hidden like a vent
- Multi-zone systems cost more up front than a single head — match the design to how you'll actually use the rooms
- For a whole, well-ducted house, central air is often the simpler, more cost-effective choice — mini-splits win on spaces ducts don't serve well
How do you size and quote a mini-split right?
Good mini-split design starts the same way as any HVAC project: a load calculation for the specific space, factoring in glass, insulation, sun exposure, and how you use the room. That determines how many BTUs and how many zones you need.
