Why does my sunroom get so hot in Phoenix?
Because it's essentially a glass box in the desert sun. Sunrooms and Arizona rooms have far more window area than any normal room, often with thin framing and limited insulation, so they trap solar heat like a greenhouse. On a Phoenix afternoon a sunroom can become the hottest room in the house by a wide margin.
Many sunrooms were also added on without being tied into the home's HVAC at all — or were tied in poorly — leaving them with little or no real cooling.

What's the right way to cool a sunroom?
The combination that actually works in the desert:
- A ductless mini-split sized for the solar load — dedicated, efficient cooling and heating on its own thermostat, independent of the central system
- Glass and shading upgrades — Low-E glass, interior/exterior shades, or awnings to cut the incoming heat
- Insulation where possible — roof and any solid walls/framing to reduce gain
- Realistic expectations — an all-glass room in summer needs both a right-sized system and shading to stay comfortable

With a load calculation that takes the glass seriously. A sunroom's cooling load is dominated by solar gain through the windows, so sizing must account for the glass area, orientation, and shading — not just square footage. Get it wrong and even a mini-split will struggle.
